The Blavatnik young scientists award focuses on honoring the most innovative young faculty-rank scientists and engineers in America.

The awards consider previous and future young faculty members who are working in science and engineering. The award provides one nominee $250,000 in unrestricted funds.

The awards goal is to identify recognize and encourage young scientists and provide an example to the younger generation of future scientists. The funding is provided by The Blavatnik Family Foundation, which has been providing much-needed support for young minds in science and technology, geared to addressing pressing global issues.

The process for nominations works by the foundation inviting groups of research universities, independent research institutions, academic medical centers, and government laboratories from around America to send in their nominations for the year.

The jury responsible for selecting Blavatnik Laureates includes some of the most renowned scientists in America. The awards are held in New York in a formal ceremony in the fall each year.

The foundation is most funded by Len Blavatnik entrepreneur, who made his empire by selling his stake in a Russian oil company, which made him $7 billion in 2013. Blavatnik has since then invested in many areas, from Broadway shows including most recently Arthur Miller’s The Crucible, Shuffle Along, and Blackbird. He also donated $25 million to Carnegie Hall in June 2016.

The Blavatnik young scientists award is a great way to encourage science and engineering students that they can make their research a reality.
